BREAKING NEWS: Scott Gordon Fired

UPDATED 1:32 PM: Rumors are flying around that captain Doug Weight could take over the coaching job as reported by Islanders Hockey Blog from @IncarceratedBob on Twitter. If so, I'd think it would be next season as he's in his final year of his contract. That'd be nice to see as Weight has great leadership as captain of this team. It'd be nice to see Guerin as an assistant, huh?

Also, Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank states that interim coach Jack Capuano will be sticking with Gordon's system, with the exception of a few tweaks. My question is: If you stick with this system, do you really think this ten game loosing streak is going to get better? I'm pretty sure Snow fired Gordon for a change in coaching...Right?

----
Reported about a week ago by Islanders411 that Scott Gordon's job was on the hot seat, it really was today. Garth Snow the Islanders GM has fired head coach Scott Gordon today. Who's here to take his spot? Bridgeport Sound Tigers head coach Jack Capuano as an interim. Gordon will remain as an advisor to Snow in the third and final year of his contract.

The Islanders management knew they needed to fix something after loosing ten games in a row, and they did. I feel they made the right move. Something had to be done. No, you shouldn't blame all these losses on Gordon, but it's certainly time for a change if Snow still intends for this team to make the playoffs.

Also, defensemen Dylan Reese has been recalled from Bridgeport. My guess is to fill sick Jack Hillen's spot.

More to come...

  1. The team has given up, the franchise has given up. This team has Nordiques written all over it. Like the Avalanche won a cup shortly after the move, the Islanders will win the cup for Hamiliton, KC, or Quebec whenever they move...

And to be honest, it can't be soon enough. As a fan who's first game was the Nystrom 7:11 overtime goal, and season ticket holder for 10 years from 1987 to 1996 I've given up on the Islanders, the county and ownership.

But the real issue here is the former ownership group is destroyed the future of the Islanders with the horrible deal they signed at the colliseum.

  2. I don't think it's a matter if they move or not, I mean if they move there not going to get any better.

  3. They're not going to move. If they do move, it will be to queens, suffolk or Brooklyn. Wang has basically lived on Long Island for most of his life. He has no plans to sell the team, or move it. He has built up a business here (Computer Associates), as well as now trying to become a real estate mogul on Long Island. He wants to leave his stamp on LI (hence the whole lighthouse project). He doesnt want his "stamp" to be something negative (eventhough right now it seems very negative) like moving a storied franchise like the Isles away. He doesnt want to be that guy. They will stay here. Mark My words, they will stay on Long Island. He just needs to spend money now. This team has the potential. In my honest opinion, they're only 2 or 3 key guys away from being true contenders.

  4. I highly doubt weight will be taking over as coach next year. The interim job has already been given to Bridgeport coach, Capuano. And if they decide not to VCR the full time job to him, they need someone with experience in the job. Look at what the rangers did with John tortellini. Second, it was posted that Capuano isn't following gordons methods, he's introducing the playing style he used in B-port, with slight adjustments.

  5. I agree, the Islanders need a coach with expirience but don't you think it'd be nice to see what Weight can offer? He's a great leader if you've been following this team when he's been the captain of it but it's just my opinion.

Also, this is what Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank quoted Jack Capuano of:

“Scott brought in a lot of structure,” said Capuano. “There are some things that we’ll tweak, but nothing major.”

Capuano and Gordon apparently have the same systems, and that's how Capuano will coach the Islanders with basically the same system as Gordon has. The same thing will lead to same results, therefore it'd be nice to see Weight with the job.

  6. I'm sorry Nick but I have to completely disagree with you. It would be absolutely moronic to see Doug Weight as coach of the Islanders. He has no credentials to be an NHL coach. We should hire someone along the lines of Bob Hartley, Ken Hitchcock, or Craig McTavish. Someone who actually knows what they're doing. It would be continuing "the Islander Way" as I would call it to hire Weight as coach. Which would be doing something completely out of the ordindary and would continue to make us the laughing stock of the NHL. Like hiring a backup goalie to be GM.

And yes, Capuano and Gordon ran the same exact system, but Cappy has some very slight differences. They ran the same system so that the kids in Bridgeport would know the system Gordon played if and when he would get called up. Which only makes sense.
