Few notes from the Isles vs. Flames

I was rather impressed with the Islanders even in a losing effort.  There was a couple of missteps, the giveaway by Eaton that caused the first goal, and the bad clear by DiPietro that caused the 3rd goal.  Wondering if that would have happened if the defensemen coming back was someone who was used to playing with him.  I have seen DiPietro do that many times and normally the puck ends up in the neutral zone.  Other than that I thought he looked pretty good, has some rust but seemed quick and seems to have a lot of confidence.  There was some players that really stood out to me in the game.

Rhett Rhakshani-  Seems like opposing defensemen have a very difficult time getting the puck away from him.

Radek Martinek-  Looked stellar.  Not sure if I just forgot how good he is since it's been so long since I have seen him play or he has really worked hard to improve his game while rehabbing.

James Wisniewski-  Very strong with the puck and a very smart hitter.  Didn't make any huge hits but they were effective in turning over the puck.

Calvin de Haan-  Smart jumping on the offense and responsible defensively.  Great anticipation got him a goal.

Rob Schremp-  Great decision making, I didn't notice any of the reckless passes as I have seen from him in the past.

And a few on a little more minor notes, Matt Martin had a couple of really nice hits and Trevor Gilles didn't show too much, but seeing an enforcer get a tip in goal is a rarity.  Tavares looked good but nothing above expectations, Parenteau seemed to play a little too cautiously to be effective.  He seems to just be looking for the pass to Tavares when there may be an opening for him to make a nifty move and get an open shot on net.  Overall they looked good considering this was their first preseason game, could have been an Islander win without a couple very good saves by Kiprusoff, but you could say the same about some of the saves by DiPietro and a couple by Koskinen could have swung it big the other way.

BREAKING NEWS: Islanders Sign Mottau, Okposo Required Surgery

The Islanders have signed Defenseman Mike Mottau to a two year one way deal, as first reported by Katie Strang.

Good pickup by the Isles. Now with the signings of Eaton, Jurcina, Wisniewski and Mottau, their D has certainly improved. Great news. I doubt Nielsen  and Hunter are going to get along well with him after Mottau's hit on Frans, with Hunter jumping in and fighting him.

Also, Kyle Okposo is out indefinitely and will need surgery to repair his shoulder. Can this team's injuries get any worse? Hamonic suffered an injury at camp today as well. And I thought during the season was the bad luck with injuries for the Isles?

The Defense Dilemma

With a long term injury to Mark Streit the big question is what do the Islanders do now, if anything.  With 7 other defensemen on 1 way contracts and 2 defense prospects who are very close to ready for thr NHL (Calvin de Hann and Travis Hamonic) odds are the Isles can fill from within, but just to have all bases covered I thought I would run down some possible replacements through the free agent market.  I know trades have been rumored, especially for Sheldon Souray, but people in the know see to have shot all of these down.  So here is a selection of guys the Isles could try to fill Streits big skates without giving anything up:

Marc-Andre Bergeron-  Former Islander who has a huge booming shot.  Been known to be lackluster defensively, but seemed to improve on that after leaving the Island.  34 points in 60 games last year in Montreal in a limited role, mostly playing the power play is pretty decent.

Mathieu Schneider-  Another former Islander who excels on the offensive side of the game.  Known to be a good friend of Garth Snow and from what I heard enjoyed his time on the team.  Only played 25 games in the NHL last year with 9 points.  Is 41 years old and would only be a very short term fix.

Kim Johnsson-  3 year run in Philadelphia where he averaged 40 points a year.  Averaged 20 a year most of his time in defensive minded Minnesota.  Has had concussion problems last year and his stats have tailed off for the past few years.

Anders Eriksson-  Had shown some playmaking ability over the years especially in the AHL, but has shown some skill at the NHL level, but it seems sporadic.  Not sure if it's due to the system he played in on each team or if he is streaky from year to year.  And on a positive note, he's already here.

Brendan Witt-  Just kidding.

These are just a few options but they seem to be the ones that make more sense.  Would love to hear your comments on what you think of these options or if you think there is a better option to try to fill the huge gap left by the absence of the Isles top defensman.

Streit's Shoulder, Okposo's Status... Camp Invitees... and Kiril Kabanov Gone?

The Islanders have played zero preseason games to date, but have already lost their best defenseman for about the next sixth months. Mark Streit tore his rotator cuff, and his labrum in a scrimmage this past Saturday morning on a hit from Matt Moulson that coach Scott Gordon is calling a "freak accident."

Obviously this is terrible news for the Islanders, but maybe something positive can come out of all of this. Maybe, this is the break that Calvin de Haan needed to finally get to the NHL. This is almost the same situation that new-Islander defenseman James Wisniewski found himself in with the Blackhawks a few years ago. The Wis caught his big break when former Islander Adrian Aucoin went down with a serious groin injury. Wisniewski showed off his skills and has been in the NHL ever since. Could this be the situation that catapults Calvin de Haan into the NHL?

Another problem the Islanders face is the status of Kyle Okposo. Okposo didn't play in Saturday's scrimmage due to a nagging shoulder injury. He was said to have been getting a second opinion today and to have some sort of timetable in place, but so far nothing has been said on KO's prognosis. However, when Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank asked coach Scott Gordon which other injured Islander (Frans Nielsen, Doug Weight) would be closest to returning, Gordon said Weight could play in one of the team's two exhibition games against either the Flyers or the Flames.

Kiril Kabanov was the first cut by the Islanders when they returned him back to the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today. Kabanov was cut today without having played in a single preseason game. Apparently they had enough of him showing up late to practice, as well as the fact that he still is nowhere near big enough to play in the NHL yet.

Sunday evening it was announced that the Islanders had invited Dean McAmmond, Manny Legace, Joel Martin, Anders Eriksson, and Krys Kolanos. The team also announced today that forward Jed Ortmeyer was also invited to camp as well.

One final note: the Islanders are still without a radio broadcasting partner, but the team maintains that they will have a contract in place by the season opener on Saturday, October, 9th against the Dallas Stars.

Ortmeyer To Attend Camp, Lineups For Preseason

Forward Jed Ortmeyer will attend training camp (along with the other five camp invites) and will play in the upcoming preseason games. Hey, didn't I say I thought the Isles will invite some more forwards? Every NHL team is required atleast 8 veterans per preseason game, so therefore, the Isles need 16. Satan time?

Here is the lineups for the two preseason games via the Isles website.

Group 1
Comeau - Tavares - Parenteau
Bailey - Schremp - Niederreiter
Martin - Ullstrom - Hunter
Gillies - Konopka - Rakhshani

MacDonald - Martinek
Eaton - Wisniewski
de Haan - Jurcina
Hamonic

DiPietro
Koskinen

Group 2
Moulson - Kolanos - Hilbert
DiBenedetto - Hisey - Sim
Haley - Romano - Joensuu
Marcinko - Yablonski

Hillen - Gervais
Reese - Kohn
Klementyev - Katic
Anders Eriksson

Roloson
Joel Martin

We'll see how it all plays out but don't rule out the Isles making a trade for a signing in the next few days/weeks.

Also, Okposo, Weight and Nielsen may or may not play Wednesday.

BREAKING NEWS: Streit Out Six Months, Isles Invite Players To Camp

Updated 5:40: The reason for Manny Legace and Joel Martin is because Poulin and Lawson have some "soreness" and the Isles don't want to push it. Martin was apparently heading to Bridgeport to camp anyway, and Legace won't attend Isles camp till Tuesday, so Joel Martin will fill in tomorrow. Also, Kyle Okposo is suffering a shoulder injury, but it's minor to Streits.

My question is, will the Isles trade for Souray? There's been talk...
--------

Mark Streit will undergo major surgery which will sideline him for about six months after being hit into the boards by Matt Moulson at the scrimmage yesterday. Matt certainly didn't intend to hurt Mark, and Streit went into the boards in a weird way. A big loss for the Islanders...

Also, the Islanders have invited the following to camp for a tryout!..

Goaltenders-Manny Legace and Joel Martin

Defenseman- Anders Eriksson

Forwards-Krys Kolanos and Dean McAmmond.

Great job by the Isles, as well all thought there would be no invites. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a few more. Just hope that DP is healthy.

Scrimmage Aftermath

With the injury of Streit being the big news of the day there were some positives in the Saturday morning scrimmage.

Rick DiPietro looked much more like the DiPietro of old.  He moved well and seemed to play with confidence.  He made some mistakes being a little aggressive, but that should come back to him with time, just a good sign that he feels well enough to take risks.

Mikko Koskinen looked very strong in net.  Made some big saves especially on an extended 5 on 3.

Rhett Rakhshani had a very good game.  Looked strong on the puck and made some good moves.

Radek Martinek's 100 mph shot was a surprise.  Shoulder problems must not be bothering him anymore.

Jurcina's 101 mph shot may be something to sneak him into the top 6.

Blake Comeau picked up where he left off at the end of the season, and Trent Hunter scoring a couple goals was a nice sight.  P.A. Parenteau got to show in the breakaway relay why the Isles want to take a chance on him, he has a great pair of hands.

And I think Rick DiPietro must be reading the IslanderMania message boards, I think 99% of the people on there was to tackle Jon Sim.  DiPietro is always there for his fans.

Pre Game Scrimmage Notes

In a few hours, the Isles will hold a scrimmage at the Coliseum starting at 11am. Following the game, there will be a skills competition. The Orange group will wear the new white away jerseys, and the Blue group will wear the new home jerseys, which were the third jerseys last year. It should be an exciting one as we get to take a look at some of the rookies play against NHL'ers. The Islanders Official Website will have a live stream of the scrimmage.

Forward Kyle Okposo will be getting the day off for some shoulder soreness. It's believed to be that he will be evaluated sometime this weekend. Also, via Islanders Point Blank, Doug Weight looks to be not in the lineup today.

Also a good sign, Rick DiPietro will be taking some action today, and share the net with Koskinen...

Here are the line combinations for the scrimmage today:
 (Per the NYI website)

WHITE
Comeau - Tavares - Parenteau
Bailey - Hisey - Niederreiter
DiBenedetto - Konopka - Hilbert
Gillies - Kabanov

Streit - Wisniewski
Eaton - Hamonic
Kohn - Gervais
Katic

Koskinen
DiPietro

BLUE
Moulson - Schremp - Rakhshani
Martin - Ullstrom - Hunter
Joensuu - Romano - Sim
Yablonski - Marcinko - Haley

de Haan - Jurcina
Hillen - Martinek
MacDonald - Reese

Initial Islander outlook

With so many experts picking the Isles to finish near the bottom I am confused as to why. This is a team that improved by 18 points from the previous year and missed the playoffs by only 9 points this past season and has now improved the biggest weakness from last year; defense. With the signing of Wisniewski, Eaton and Jurcina the Isles added two bona fide NHL top 4 defense and added depth that was desperately needed. When looking at the Isles roster I see what looks to me like a playoff team. Here is my run down on what I expect from the current roster.
Goalies:
Rick DiPietro- Everything that I hear coming out if Islander camp is positive. He is always in amazing shape, I can see him platooning with Roloson to start the season and if the knee/hip can hold up I think he can return to form that made him an all-star.
Dwayne Roloson- If he does platoon with DiPietro I think it may help an aging goalie. He is strong physically and mentally and will perform admirably in any situation.
Nathan Lawson- I see him coming up if either DiPietro or Roloson get hurt, he is a solid young goalie and I think he would get the nod with Koskinen coming off of season ending surgery, and would really benefit from playing full time in the A.

Defense:
Mark Eaton- Solid defense and sporadically jumping up in the play. Would be happy if he plays well enough to be a plus player.
Bruno Gervais- I don't think things bode well for Mr. Gervais, he will have a hard time staying in an Isles jersey this year. I see him clearing waivers soon after training camp and spending his year in Bridgeport unless there are a couple injuries on the big squad.
Jack Hillen- Solid D, good offense and surprisingly great skater. Quietly becoming a strong top 6 D man.
Milan Jurcina- 7th defenseman. Lots of healthy scratches, see him play if injuries abound or looking for more size against goon filled teams.
Andrew MacDonald- Another quietly solid D man. Moves puck well and makes smart decisions.
Radek Martinek- If he can stay healthy he is one of the best defensive defenseman you can find. Really helps the penalty kill.
Mark Streit- Think the addition of the Wiz will do nothing but help Streit. He might be a little more confident in taking risks with the big man backing him up. Watch his point numbers increase from last year.
James Wisniewski- I think Isles fans will love what they see from the Wiz. Big guy, huge minute eater who knows how to use his size.

Forwards:
Josh Bailey- I think he will slowly continue to progress but I wouldn't expect big numbers from him.
Blake Comeau- I think his late season surge wasn't a fluke. He has the skills and a great heavy shot. If he can build his confidence and consistency he will be an above average player. Just fear him becoming a frustratingly streaky player.
Trevor Gilles- I know he is a fan favorite, but I haven't seen a ton of impressive skills from him. Think the signing of Konopka might limit his role on the team and may be a ticket to Bridgeport.
Trent Hunter- Has had a problem regaining the goal scoring he started out with early in his career, but has continued to be a force on the team for being a good leader and defensively sound. Would be a huge bonus if he could net more than 20 goals, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Zenon Konopka- He will fight and be a fan favorite. Also is a monster in the face off circle which makes him more valuable than your run of the mill enforcer. Can take important defensive zone draws.
Matt Martin- Will get every opportunity to make the team and may force Gilles out of the lineup, I haven't seen enough of him to really give a good overview, but most of what I have heard has been positive.
Matt Moulson- Will crack 30 goals again. Has great hands and finds himself in the right spot all the time.
Frans Nielson- Best defensive forward the Isles have had in a long time. Would be a lot more Selke trophy talk is he was in a major market.
Kyle Okposo- I see him bouncing back and putting up a much higher goal total this year. Great leadership, wouldn't be surprised to see him wear the “C” after Weight retires.
P.A. Parenteau- Has great skills as he showed in the AHL last year. Could be this year's Moulson. If his skating can catch up to his hands he could be a big threat, especially if he is on a line with someone who draws more of the opposing defensemen's attention.
Rob Schremp- Breakout year for Schremp this year. Gordon's system was tailor made for Schremp, and a full year in the system will do wonders. I wouldn't be surprised to see him crack the 30 goal mark, especially if he can get on the #1 power play unit.
Jon Sim- Bridgeport for the whole season, barring a slew of injuries.
John Tavares- Would be amazing to see him have a Stamkos like year, who he often gets compared to, but that would be a log shot. Had amazing moments last year which looked like snapshots of the future of his career, but I don't see him exploding offensively this year. I see him improving slowly for the next few years and expect to see him in the 30-35 goal range.
Doug Weight- I think Weight is of much more importance than his on ice play. He is steady leadership, can be a calming force on the power play and is an ideal model of responsibility for the youth of the team. If he can pass on even half of his level of personal responsibility and willingness to sacrifice for his team to the youth of the Islanders you will see them grow leaps and bounds in a short period of time.

Overall I think the additions made along with the natural growth of the young players equal a team that can finish in the 6th-8th place in the east and put up a fight in the playoffs. They have dedication in spades and that can go along way in the NHL.

Isles handling Kabanov the right way.

After Kirill Kabanov was disciplined again in the early stages of training camp there have been people saying that he doesn't deserve to be in camp and that he should be sent back to juniors immediately.  I disagree with both statements and here is why.  He is immature and he needs a lot of growing to do.  I don't think anyone would disagree with that, but how to handle him is something else.  Staying in training camp and facing discipline for his immature mistakes is the way to go.  The Islanders could gain quite a bit by molding this young athlete into the kind of player the team wants.  Having him spend his time with the team learning exactly what it will take to make the team and learning from guys like Doug Weight, Kyle Okposo, and Rick DiPietro can be nothing but a positive for the team and maybe he goes to juniors at the end of camp with a little more of a positive attitude and the knowledge that he needs to grow up to play in the greatest hockey league in the world, and maybe a little more respect from his junior teammates who will see him as someone who made it through an NHL training camp and not the guy who can't stay on a team.
If he is sent back to juniors early he is going in one a bad note to his teammates, who can trust him to stay and work hard if they see he couldn't take an NHL camp serious enough.  The progression of this player means more to the Isles than for a junior squad.  The Islanders would gain greatly if he matures into a great player in a few years, not Moncton, who don't gain anything if he can't produce and be a valuable member of the team immediately.  They would sooner cut ties than work three times as hard to develop him and not reap the rewards.
There is no doubt he has the talent to be a great player in the future, and that is why I think the Isles are doing the right thing, if this training camp wakes him up and guys like Weight can show him the right path then they may be looking at a future star in this league.  If he can't pull it together after spending a few weeks getting a taste of what could be his future then maybe there is no hope for him.

Tuesday Quick Hits

-Kabanov was late AGAIN to practice

-Parenteau and Streit got the day off

-Nino signed his entry level contract yesterday (3 years). It appears he will play the first 9 games with the Isles, then a decision will be made for him to stay or go back to his old team. Kinda like what the Isles did with Bailey, and Bailey stayed.

-DP will wear those blue pads during the season as I asked the Islanders Official Twitter Account

-Islanders and Devils could be talking about trade

-Konopka skated today and made his training camp debut

-Christian Arnold of Islanders Hockey Blog interviews Kyle Okposo Sunday about being a possible captain in the future and his reply is "There's been some talk, but right now, Dougie's (Weight) our captain". Great to hear from Okposo as he doesn't just care about himself.

More in the next few days...

Isles Not Done Shopping Yet?

Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank reports in an interview with Islanders GM Garth Snow that if a decent top 6 forward becomes available, Snow will try his best to acquire him. Great to hear from Snow, and hopefully we will indeed get our top 6 forward that we have all been waiting for.

I believe the team the if the Isles do trade, will be the Devils, as they need to clear space. There has been rumor all summer that the Islanders shown mild interest in some of their forwards.  I do believe also that Snow may of been in talks with the Devs, and also other teams as well. Snow's not the guy that will just sit in his office and do nothing, and even if he keeps it to himself, he really is looking out in the market
.
So keep your eye out these next few weeks as teams need to clear space before they will  set rosters...

A few quick hits for this week.

-Not only will Rick DiPietro get some camp days off, so will Doug Weight as he takes it slow since he had shoulder surgery

-James Wisniewski didn't practice today

-Mark Eaton returned today after being out because of his back

-Konopka should attend training camp sometime this week

My 2010-2011 Predicted Lines, Day 3 Notes, Butch Goring's Negativity On The Isles

My predicted lines for the 2010-2011 season are...
(Not in positions)

Okposo
Tavares
Moulson

Comeau
Bailey
Nielsen

Parenteau
Hunter
Schremp

Gillies
Konopka
Martin

El Nino*
Weight*

Weight is definitely going to play this season, and were not sure if Nino's staying on LI or going.
----

Day 3 Notes
-Andy Hilbert didn't practice today, he's listed day to day
-Rick DiPietro will have a planned day off tomorrow
-Rick DiPietro's birthday was today, he turned 29. Happy Birthday, DP!
-Jeremy Yablonski and Trever Gillies are best friends, as you know. He also used to be on a line with Isles captain Doug Weight on the St. Louis Blues. (Islanders website)
----
I don't know if anyone watched Hockey Night Live last night, or even knew it was on, but Butch Goring predicted that the Isles would finish 13th in the East. Chris Botta  brought this up, and I'm very glad he did. As I was reading his comments on that post, someone named Nick (what a coincidence) said "So Jaffe wasn’t positive enough so they canned him but Butch picks us to finish bottom five?".

I one hundred percent agree with him. The Islanders rejected Jaffe's contract apparently because of his "negativity" on the team. Okay, no problem. Billy Jaffe's gone. But now we have Butch Goring named the new color man and in his first appearance on T.V since getting the job, he predicts the Isles to finish 13th?

Now I understand why Isles fans went crazy over Jaffe's departure...

Feel free to comment with your lines, and your thoughts on Butch's prediction.

DiPietro Happy and Healthy at Isles Training Camp

(originally posted on Islanders Hockey Blog)

The #1 overall selection from the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Rick DiPietro, completed his first day of training camp in good spirits.

Ricky told NHL.com: "It's good to have a normal routine back, the last couple of years have been tough, but I've learned a lot of pretty important lessons. You take the positive out of all of that and move forward. I'm pretty optimistic and excited about the start of the season.”

It goes without saying that the Islanders’ franchise goaltender has had injury woes over the years; his cavalcade of injuries began during the 2008 All Star Weekend, and it would be fair to say that he has not been an effective netminder since.

DiPietro madeshort comeback last season, starting eight games for the Islanders, posting a 2-5-0 record with a 2.6 GAA and a .900 SV%. However, swelling in his left knee forced him to shut down, for the year.

Head Coach Scott Gordon noted that: “We're going to try to do everything right. Obviously, this was really the first all-out practice. If we don't feel like it's the right thing for [DiPietro] to skate tomorrow, we'll just let him have it off. We've got a long training camp here. We've just got to try to make sure that we do everything we can to allow him to be fully functional once the season starts. We haven't even been able to see him on the ice the first day the last two years, so this was a huge step in the right direction."

At any rate, Rick’s nightly presence between the posts will undoubtedly aid the Islanders in their struggle to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2010-2011 NHL season.

Rookie Game 1: Isles At Bruins, Camp Starts Tomorrow

Last night, the Isles played the Bruins in a rookie game (By the way, loved those new away white jerseys). The final score was 5-2 Bruins. El Nino, as they call him, tipped in a goal, as well as Rob Figren netting a goal. Nino got in his first fight, but wasn't too happy with himself after it.

Lots of big hits, fights, and nice plays coming from the TD Garden last night. From what I saw, the Isles rookies played very physical. You couldn't go five minutes without a little scrum. Even though they took the loss, they're still pretty impressive.

Camp opens tomorrow and these rookies have one more game to show they deserve to attend it. The Isles will faceoff against the Burins again tonight at 6:55. You can watch it live on the Isles offical website.

***Also, no word on any NHL players attending training camp on a tryout basis with the Isles, but if anyone accepted, we should know tomorrow morning***

Quick Hits: Martin and Joensuu, Camp Invites, Satan...

-Matt Martin and Jesse Joensuu skated today with the guys
-Chris Botta reports that Miro Satan is close to signing an NHL contract, so he probably wont be at the Isles tryouts.
-As of now, not many NHL'ers accepted the Isles invite to tryout with them

My take: I can see Martin giving a good chance on the team this season, he can play in mostly all forward areas. He can even get physical and stand up for his teammates.

On Satan: If Satan doesn't sign with an NHL team, I would certainly expect to see him trying out with the Isles. But, like Chris Botta said, he's close to signing an NHL contract. I'm just saying, if something goes wrong, it will be time to pull out your Satan jerseys.
If no one accepts the Isles camp invites, then I suggest that the Isles go out and look for a top 6 forward. My opinion is that they need an experienced NHL'er on the team. I'm not saying that top 6 is going to lead them into the playoffs, but you can't rely on Moulson all the time.

Sometime this week, I will post- My potential lines, and grading the Isles...
